GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES



SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES - Institutional Scholarships

Some of the following institutional scholarships allow Homewood High School to nominate one or two students to apply for the award.  Please note the important deadlines and procedures in the descriptions below to be considered a nominee.  These special scholarships do not include all merit-based or need-based scholarships that an institution offers.  Visit a college or university's website or speak with the institutional representative for HHS to obtain a list of scholarships available to applicants.

North Carolina State University - Park Scholarship

Based on outstanding accomplishments and potential in scholarship, leadership, service, and character, this scholarship opportunity is for the exceptionally talented and well-prepared young men and women who merit the intellectual challenge of a distinguished faculty and a superior university.  The scholarship award includes tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, travel, and personal expenses.  Homewood High School can nominate up to two seniors to apply for the Park Scholarship.  If you are interested in being endorsed by HHS for the Park Scholarship, then email Mrs. Meeks by Wednesday, September 5, 2018.  Nominees must take the ACT by September and apply for admission to NC State via the Common App by October 15th.  For more information about the Park Scholarship, visit https://park.ncsu.edu.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - Thomas Wolfe Scholarship
This scholarship is a full undergraduate support for student writers.  Students interested in applying for this scholarship must apply to UNC-Chapel Hill by October 15th and submit the Thomas Wolfe Scholarship application by November 15th (the scholarship application opens September 1st).  Thomas Wolfe was a novelist and short-story writer from Asheville, NC, and he attended Chapel Hill.  More complete information and the scholarship application may be found here.

Davidson College - Bryan Scholarship
Valued at $35,000 annually, the Bryan Scholarship is offered to two scholar-athletes.  Candidates are chosen on the basis of academic and personal excellence; strong promise of significant impact in their classes and in their lives on campus; and proven potential for significant success in Davidson's NCAA Division I athletic program.  Homewood High School can nominate up to three candidates for the Bryan Scholarship.  Email Mrs. Meeks by Monday, September 10, 2018 if you would like to be nominated for this scholar-athlete scholarship. 

Robertson Scholars Leadership Program
The Robertson is the only program that combines the extraordinary resources of two world-class universities -- Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. This comprehensive program includes a 4-year scholarship to one of these universities, 3 fully-funded summer experiences, and unique access to the academic and extracurricular offerings on both campuses.  The program seeks students who have demonstrated the outstanding potential to become great leaders in college and beyond.  Homewood High School may nominate up to two exceptionally qualified seniors to apply for the Robertson Scholarship.  If you wish to be considered one of our school's nominees, then email Mrs. Meeks by Wednesday, September 12, 2018.


University of North Carolina at Charlotte - Levine Scholars Program
Valued at $155,000, this scholarship program admits 20 students annually and provides them with the tools, resources, and community they need to prepare for lives of visionary leadership and positive social impact.  Levine Scholars are passionate about making a difference in the world around them.  Smart, motivated, community-focused leaders make great Levine Scholars.  If you are interested in being nominated to the Levine Scholars Program, then email Mrs. Meeks by Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018.  

University of Virginia - Jefferson Scholarship
The Jefferson Scholars Foundation offers Jefferson Scholarships for undergraduate study at the University of Virginia.  The goal is to attract the most outstanding students in the nation and the world to UVA, students who are extraordinary leaders, scholars, and citizens.  Individual merit in these three areas is the sole criterion for selection.  Financial need is not considered.  The stipend totals approximately $240,000 for non-Virginia residents, and includes tuition, room, board, books, and miscellaneous expenses for students enrolled full-time for four years.  Homewood High School can nominate one student to apply for the Jefferson Scholarship.  Students who wish to be considered our school's nominee should email Mrs. Meeks by Wednesday, Oct 3, 2018.  Nominees may not apply early decision (binding) to any institution.

Davidson College - John M. Belk Scholarship
Valued at more than $65,000 annually to cover the cost of tuition, room/board, fees, the John M. Belk Scholarship is Davidson's most prestigious merit program.  Recipients receive additional money to cover the cost of two special-study stipends.  Belk Scholars are those students whose outstanding intellectual ability and success, leadership experience, commitment to service and overall personal vigor mark them as those who will accomplish much and contribute most to the Davidson community and in their lives beyond their college years.  Homewood High School can nominate up to two seniors to apply for the Belk Scholarship.  Nominees must apply to Davidson.  Email Mrs. Meeks by Wednesday, October 3, 2018 if you are interested in being considered one of HHS's nominees.

Washington University in St. Louis - Danforth Scholars Program
This program is seeking candidates who have exhibited a capacity for service and leadership, as well as academic excellence, and who will embrace the challenges of a rigorous academic curriculum.  Also, candidates should exhibit qualities that embody the essence of the Danforth family -- maturity, strong moral character, selflessness, and commitment to the community.  Recipients may earn a full- or partial-tuition scholarship, renewed each year provided they progress academically and uphold their high standards of character.  To apply for the Danforth Scholars Program, submit an application for admission (Common App).  Then, login to the WashU Pathway to submit a separate application, which requires completion of two essays and submission of a letter of recommendation.  Deadline to submit the Danforth application is January 2, 2019.  For more information about the Danforth and other merit-based scholarships at WashU, click here


Boston University - Trustee Scholars Program
The admission application and Trustee Scholarship application are due by December 1, 2018.  Trustee Scholars rank at the top of their classes and demonstrate exceptional leadership in their schools and communities.  The scholarship covers full undergraduate tuition plus orientation and mandatory student fees for four years.  For more information about the Trustee Scholarship and application process, click here.

Georgia Tech - Birmingham Alumni Network Scholarship

Students interested in this scholarship must complete an online scholarship application once an admission application has been submitted to Georgia Tech.  The scholarship application is due TBD for the 2018-19 school year.  Visit www.gtalumni.org/scholarshipapplication to access the scholarship application.

Huntingdon College - Presidential Fellows Program
The Fellows is a unique experiential learning program for high achieving students.  Participation in an academic team for a minimum of 10 hours per week is required.  Applicants must have a 23+ ACT and apply for admission as a full-time student.  Presidential Fellows may not be a member of a NCAA Athletic Team Roster, Huntingdon College Cheerleaders, or the Huntingdon College Band. The Fellows scholarship ranges between $74,000-80,000 and may be stacked on top of other scholarships and financial aid.  For more about the Fellows Program, contact Leanne Mallory at leanne.mallory@hawks.huntingdon.edu.  Priority deadline for the Presidential Fellows Program is December 1, 2018.

Centre College
The following are three distinctive and lucrative scholarship programs for outstanding seniors planning to attend Centre College.  Each scholarship provides full-tuition and requires a separate application from the admissions application.  Students must apply to Centre for admissions using the Common App by January 15th.  Students must be nominated by their counselor.  If you're interested in one of these scholarships, please email Mrs. Meeks by January 3rd.
* Brown Fellows Program - seeks ambitious, intellectually curious, academically accomplished students with high leadership potential.
* Grissom Scholars Program - awards scholarships to high-need, first generation college students who are driven to achieve academically, have exceptional potential as leaders, possess strong character and compassion.
* Lincoln Scholars Program - for students aspiring to change the world; seeks passionate, idealistic, visionary, audacious, and selfless students

FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) Scholarship Competition
For students interested in the global industries of fashion, visual arts, graphics, interior design, social media, and entertainment.  Visit bit.ly/FIDMscholarship for entry details.  Deadline to apply is March 29, 2019.  FIDM is an accredited college with four California campuses.

AES Engineering Scholarship - Deadline October 6, 2018

The scholarship is open to motivated students who need help furthering their education.  Click here for more information and to apply.  

Horatio Alger Scholarship - Deadline October 25, 2018
Awards range from $6,000 to $25,000.  Students may apply online from Aug. 1st to Oct. 25th at scholars.horatioalger.org.  Eligibility criteria include: U.S. citizenship, high school graduation in spring 2018, be involved in extracurricular & community service activities, display integrity & perseverance in overcoming adversity, have a minimum 2.0 GPA, and demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income).

Wendy's High School Heisman Scholarship - Deadline October 17, 2018
Scholarship requires a minimum 3.0 GPA, participation in at least one school-sponsored sport, and shown demonstrated leadership at school and in the community.  Click here for more information and to apply.

Ron Brown Scholarship - Priority Deadline November 1, 2018
The scholarship program seeks to identify students who will make significant contributions to society.  Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential, and make an impact on their communities through service to others.  Scholarship is valued at $40,000 ($10,000 per academic year).  To be eligible, applicants must be: U.S. citizen or permanent resident, Black/African American and current high school seniors.  Application, letters of recommendation, and transcript must be sent mailed in one package, and must be postmarked by November 1st.  For more information and to apply, click here.

Lois Pickard Scholarship Competition - Entry Deadline December 10, 2018
Open to serious & gifted young musicians ages 12 through high school senior.  Students of strings, brass, winds, percussion, and piano are eligible to enter in one category only.  Competition date is Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019 at Birmingham-Southern College.  Entry deadline is Dec. 10, 2018 and entry fee is $40.  See Mrs. Meeks in Guidance for a brochure application and more information about how to enter the scholarship competition.  Scholarships range from $750-1,500.  

Smith Scholarship Foundation - Deadline January 7, 2019
"Alabama scholarships for Service, not just Grades" -- A minimum C+ average and civic involvement and/or special family responsibility is required.  The scholarship application, which opens Sept. 15, and completion of the FAFSA, which opens Oct. 1st, must be completed by the deadline.  Visit www.smithscholarships.com for more information and to access the application.  Also for more details, click here to read through Commonly Asked Questions about the Smith Scholarship.

Tommy Smith Scholarship - Deadline May 31, 2019
Must be a high school senior who has been admitted to a college or university.  Scholarship is worth $1,000.  Answer the following essay prompt: "If you could start any business while in college or afterward, what would it be and why?"  Visit http://tommysmithscholarship.com/ for more information and to apply for the scholarship.

Debbie Rice Scholarship - Deadline November 16, 2018
$10,000 scholarship sponsored by Alabama Leaders of Educational Technology.  Seeking graduating senior with a record of volunteerism in the community in both non-school sponsored and extracurricular school activities.  Additional eligibility requirements:  minimum 2.75 GPA; and planning to attend a 2- or 4-year college or technical school to pursue a degree in computer science, IT, technology, or related field.  Student must complete an application, submit their resume, and two letters of recommendation.  To get an application, please see or email Mrs. Meeks.

Thomas Huey, Jr. Memorial Scholarship - Deadline December 31, 2018
Sponsored by BLSA, an association for legal professionals, this scholarship is worth $1,000 and is awarded to a high school senior.  The scholarship will be awarded based on financial need, grade point average (3.0+), and achievements and accomplishments.  Must be postmarked by the deadline.  The application requires submitting the application form, a transcript, letter of recommendation, biographical statement, and a portion of your parents' 2017 income tax return.  For a copy of the application form, see Mrs. Meeks.

George Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship - Deadline December 1, 2018
Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $5,000 and are available to students who enjoy history, politics, and government/military service.  The scholarship application includes completion of an application form/cover page, and submitting it along with a letter of recommendation, high school transcript, and a resume.  Three copies of the application must be submitted to the GWCF organization and must be postmarked by the deadline.  Visit www.gwcf.org to read about the scholarship.  Deadline by which all application materials must be submitted to Mrs. Meeks is December 1, 2018.  See Mrs. Meeks for more information about what documents to submit.


GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship - Deadline TBD
$40,000 scholarship awarded to high school seniors who demonstrate exceptional leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship.  Click here to access more information, additional criteria, and the application.

National Beta Scholarship Program - Deadline TBD
National Beta will award several scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 to 12th grade Beta members.  National Beta is looking for academic excellence, demonstrated leadership, commendable character, school and community service, and participation in National Beta activities.  For more information, visit www.betaclub.org/scholarship.

Lisa Martz Hope Scholarship - Deadline TBD

This scholarship is open to students who have been personally impacted by colorectal cancer.  Applicants must also meet the following criteria: be a U.S. citizen, be a resident of Alabama, have a minimum 2.5 GPA, and be admitted to a 2-yr or 4-yr. college.  For a copy of the application, see Mrs. Meeks.

USDA/1890 National Scholars Program - Deadline TBD
The Scholars Program is a partnership between the US Department of Agriculture and the 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Universities.  For students interested in majoring in agriculture, food, natural resource sciences, and other related fields (see p. 4 of the application for a listing of related fields).  Criteria: minimum 3.0 GPA and 21 ACT, exemplary leadership traits and community service.  The scholarship provides for full tuition to recipients who are accepted and who enroll in an 1890 land-grant university (see p. 3 of application for a listing of universities).   The application eligibility, instructions, and form are on pp. 5-27.  Click here to download the entire application packet.  Completed application should be sent directly to the university the student plans to attend.

Alpha Sigma Zeta Scholarship - Deadline TBD
$1,000 scholarship to a high school senior who meets the following criteria:
* at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.00 scale)
* clocked at least 50 hours of service with signed documentation to verify dates, times, & locations of service hours

Alabama School Public Relations Association Student Scholarship - Deadline TBD
ALSPRA is a statewide coalition of professional and school communicators.  The organization provides financial support for students who plan to enroll in an Alabama college or university after high school graduation and plan to seek a degree in communication, public relations, or related field.  Click here for more information and to apply.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Academic Scholarship - Deadline TBD
A need-based academic scholarship to a deserving high school senior with a GPA between 2.8 and 3.5.  To download the application packet, click here.  All application materials must be postmarked by the deadline.  Two letters of recommendation, an essay, copy of ACT scores, and an unofficial transcript must accompany the application packet.

2018 Cromwell Trust Scholarship - Deadline TBD
Scholarship awards will range between $500 and $5,000, depending on the quality of the applications and ambitions presented by applicants (such as desired education versus college expenses).  Application is open to those involved in creativity and the performing arts (including poets, visual artists, musical theatre performers, musicians, singers, dancers, storytellers).  Preference will be given to applicants from the service area of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham.  Click here to download the application.

Junior League of Birmingham Academic Scholarship - Deadline TBD
JLB is an organization that promotes volunteerism, the developing potential of women, improvement of the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  The aim of the scholarship is to recognize and assist female students in the Birmingham area who have exemplified characteristics that complement the vision of JLB.  Click here to access the application.

Rotary Club of Shades Valley Scholarship - Deadline TBD
Open to current high school seniors at Homewood High School.  Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, academics, ambition/goals, extracurricular activities, honors & awards, and interview.  Application must include resume', essay, recent FAFSA form, and a high school transcript (see Ms. Neece, registrar in Guidance, for a transcript).  Application and other required materials must be postmarked by the deadline.  Click here to download the application.

Jefferson State Ambassadors Scholarship - Deadline TBD
Jefferson State Ambassadors support the Recruiting Office at Jeff State Community College.  Applicants must have at least a 3.0 high school GPA and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.  An application plus supporting documents (transcript, letter of recommendation) should be submitted to Jeff State.  For more information about the Ambassadors and to download an application, click here.  You may also pick up an application in Mrs. Meeks's office.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority / Classic Pearls Scholarship - Deadline TBD
This $7,500 scholarship is awarded based on academic merit and community service.  Open to all college-bound high school students in the Birmingham metropolitan area.  Click here to download the application.  Completed application must be postmarked by the deadline.

Homewood Rotary Club Scholarship - Deadline TBD
This scholarship is open to all HHS graduating seniors who plan to attend a 4-year, 2-year, or vocational/technical educational program in fall 2018.  Students with demonstrated financial need will be given priority.  The scholarship will cover educational expenses (tuition, fees, books, room, board).  Click here to download scholarship information and click here to download the application, or you may see Mrs. Meeks for a printed copy.  An official transcript and a letter of recommendation must be turned in with the application.  Completed applications are due to Mrs. Meeks by the end of 5th period (1:10 p.m.) on TBD.

Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter Scholarship - Deadline TBD
To apply, students must be a graduating high school senior, have a 3.0+ GPA, have 20+ ACT (or 910+ SAT), demonstrated community involvement, and demonstrated communication and leadership skills.  Completed applications must be received by the deadline.  Application may be downloaded by clicking here, or see Mrs. Meeks for a printed application.

A.L. Bratcher Scholarship (eCo Credit Union) - Deadline TBD
This $2,500 scholarship is for high school seniors who will be enrolled in an undergraduate course of study during the 2018-2019 academic school year at an accredited 2- or 4-year college, university, or vocation-technical college in the U.S.  Click here to download an application.

Mercedes-Benz Scholarship Program - Deadline TBD
Scholarship for a graduating high school senior attending a high school in Jefferson County and who is planning to enroll full-time at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall 2018.  Apply here

American Association of Blacks in Energy Premier Award - Deadline TBD
AABE is an organization of energy professionals dedicated to ensuring the input of African Americans and other minorities into the discussion and development of energy policies, regulations, R&D technologies, and environmental issues.  Student must plan to major in business, one of the physical sciences, technology, engineering, or math fields in preparation for a career in the energy sector.  The Premier Award is awarded to encourage minority students to pursue careers in energy-related fields and to award a scholarship to support college expenses.  The Premier Award is for $5,000 and will be awarded to a high school senior with a 3.0+ GPA and who demonstrates superior achievement and community involvement.  For an application, see Mrs. Meeks.

Alabama Home Builders Association Scholarship - Deadline TBD
For students planning to pursue a career in the core trades of the home building industry.  This includes electrical engineering, HVAC, landscaping, masonry, plumbing, drafting/design, building science, civil engineering, and construction.  For more information and to apply, click here.

Colleges That Change Lives Scholarship - Deadline TBD
There are 44 colleges who are part of the "Colleges That Change Lives" organization.  CTCL will be awarding $4,000 scholarships to two students who plan to attend one of the CTCL colleges this fall.  For a complete listing of all 44 colleges, click here.  To learn more about the scholarship and to apply, click here.  This scholarship is open to all first-year college students for the 2018-19 school year, including international students and undocumented students, who choose to attend a CTCL college or university.

American Society of Civil Engineers Scholarship - Deadline TBD

Alabama Center for Architecture - Deadline TBD
For high school seniors who have been accepted to an accredited school of architecture.  Must have a 2.5+ GPA to apply.  Click here for the application.

Dr. Jodi Newton Scholarship - Deadline TBD
The Homewood City Schools Foundation awards this $1,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who plans to attend an accredited college, university, or trade school in Fall 2018.  Applicants must have a minimum 2.75 GPA.  Completed application, which includes the application form, resume, one letter of recommendation, and a short essay, is due to Mrs. Meeks by the end of 5th period on TBD.  Click here to download the application form or you may pick up a printed copy from Mrs. Meeks.

Homewood Education Association Scholarship - Deadline TBD
This scholarship is open to Homewood High School graduating seniors who plan to pursue a career in teaching.  A completed application will include the application form, resume, essay, and letter of recommendation.  The recommendation letter should be placed in a sealed envelope and given to the student to turn in with the rest of the application.  Applications are due to Mrs. Meeks by the end of 5th period on TBD.

Herb Hanes - Bill Sparks Scholarship - Deadline TBD
Sponsored by the Ensley High School Alumni Association, this $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who participated in varsity athletics or in an athletic related activity (cheerleader, trainer, dance team, etc.), and who has been accepted into a four-year college or university in Alabama.  An application, three letters of recommendation, a high school transcript, and a brief essay are required to complete the application packet.  For a copy of the application, see Mrs. Meeks.  The application must be received by the Alumni Association by the deadline.

Senior Class Scholarship - Deadline TBD

Hometown Heroes Scholarship - Deadline TBD
This scholarship is for students who are first responders or whose parents are first responders.  This would include dispatch, 911 call center employees, police officers, firefighters, EMT/ambulance workers, or any other certified first responder.  A completed application includes the application form (see Mrs. Meeks for a copy), two letters of recommendation, and a typed essay titled "what it means to be a first responder."  Completed applications are due to Mrs. Meeks by the end of 5th period on TBD.

Robert O. Finley, III Foundation Scholarship - Deadline TBD
This $5,000 scholarship was established by former athletes of Coach Bob Finley to provide financial aid to a high school graduating senior.  Coach Finley believed that participation in athletics was an excellent way to build character.  Applicant must: be any child of Berry High School graduate, participate in any athletic endeavor (player, manager, trainer, cheerleader), overall acceptable GPA, be accepted into a school of higher learning beyond high school, and exhibit character traits such as outstanding citizenship and unselfish service to community/school/faith.  Essay and resume must accompany the scholarship application.  See Mrs. Meeks for a copy of the application.

Accuplan Benefits Services Scholarship - Deadline TBD
The application process includes making a 30-second video explaining what you would like to do in the future once you have retired, and what are some things you can be doing now and in the future to be ready for retirement.  Accuplan is providing a $2,000 scholarship to help students be successful in school and to raise awareness about the importance of retirement.  Click here to access the application.

Aspiring Nurse Scholarship - Deadline TBD
$1,000 scholarship to a future nurse in the 2018 high school graduating class.  Interested students may visit https://www.nursingschoolsalmanac.com and click the banner on the right-hand side of the website's homepage.
