LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Distinguished Young Women Program - for current Junior girls

What is it?This program is a national scholarship program that inspires high school girls to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments.  High school girls are provided college scholarships, build self-confidence, work on skills to interview effectively and to speak in public, and showcase excellence in academic achievement, physical fitness, on-stage performance skills, and the ability to think and communicate clearly.  
Participants are representatives of the "total young lady," who is involved in her school and community, and who is genuinely interested in furthering her college education and pursuing her career goals.

When and where is it?Program dates are July 19-20, 2019 at Vestavia Hills High School.  Rehearsals will be held July 12-18, 2019.

How do I enter?The deadline to enter the competition is March 3, 2019.  An orientation meeting will take place on March 10.  Interested students may apply online at jefferson.al.distinguishedyw.org and click the "Apply Now" tab.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP FORUM (YLF) - for current Sophomores & Juniors

Do you want to make a difference? Be a leader? Change your community? Then it is time to apply to the Youth Leadership Forum (YLF). 

Each year 44 high school sophomores and juniors are selected from all over Jefferson County to participate in Youth Leadership Forum. For over 30 years, YLF has been training young leaders by providing hands-on opportunities to learn about their community and themselves. Is it your turn to become part of this select group?

CAPSTONE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY - for current Sophomores

The University of Alabama Honors College provides an environment where exceptional students can thrive. Capstone Leadership Academy (CLA) features a slate of dynamic speakers and group activities for students to develop leadership skills. One hundred sixty outstanding high school sophomores will be selected for this popular event on the University of Alabama campus. The Capstone Leadership Academy will be held February 28 – March 1, 2019.

Potential applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least a 3.0 and write a brief essay on one of three of Capstone’s leadership themes – values, vision, and voice.

If you are interested in being considered for Capstone, please complete the essay and return to Mrs. Brooks no later than Wednesday, September 19, 2018


COMMUNITY EVENTS

FREE ACT Workshop - Hispanic girls!

Girls Inc. of Central Alabama will have a FREE ACT Workshop for Hispanic Girls in High School (grades 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th) on Saturday, October 6th from 9:30am to 2:00pm. The registration deadline is Wednesday, October 3rd.


In the flyer, Girls Inc. is asking the girls to return this form to the counselor or the ESL teacher.

ASVAB

Homewood High School will be administering the ASVAB to interested Juniors and Seniors.  This test can help identify skill areas and career interests and furthermore explore possibilities for one's future.  Click the link for more information!
